Rafa Benitez has become one of the latest names to be linked as Tottenham Hotspur continue their search for their next manager.
The Daily Mail reported last week that Benitez is on Spurs’ radar. The 61-year-old is currently out of work after an 18-month spell in China.
Benitez is something of a divisive figure amongst football fans. He has however, won silverware throughout his managerial career, with the highlights during his time in England coming when he won the Champions League and FA Cup with Liverpool, as well as the Europa League at Chelsea.
So there are likely to be, at least, some Spurs fans in favour of appointing the Spaniard. And it may well be that one player within the Tottenham squad is particularly keen.
Moussa Sissoko worked with Benitez during his time at Newcastle. Ultimately, their spell ended with the Magpies getting relegated.
But Sissoko had extremely high praise for his old boss in 2019 as he suggested that he wished that he had got the chance to work with him for longer.
“My first relegation, I was very sad,” he told the Daily Mail. “Newcastle are a huge club with massive fans and the potential is big. On the pitch, we did not do enough. We did not show our quality.
“I believed Newcastle would come straight back up but I went to Tottenham to fight for titles. I actually wish Rafa Benitez was there for more than the final three months of that season because we would have stayed up if he had come earlier.”
Of course, Spurs are not battling to avoid relegation. And in truth, Sissoko is not really the player Benitez needs to click with if he did come in in North London.
But Sissoko’s praise does provide a reminder that some players love working for Benitez. And if everything clicks, it could prove to be an inspired decision should they appoint him.
