What Martin Zubimendi has been told about signing for Manchester City by Sergio Gomez

Martin Zubimendi is being linked with a move to Manchester City and one of Pep Guardiola’s former signings has some advice for him about the move.

Zubimendi looks unlikely to make the switch to the Etihad during the January transfer window, however, in the summer, his name could become a hot topic.

Guardiola will be keen to add another midfielder to his squad and find a long-term successor for Rodri.

Zubimendi looks to be the perfect alternative to the Ballon d’Or winner but one of his current Real Sociedad teammates has sent him a key message about joining Guardiola’s team.

Sergi Gomez warns Martin Zubimendi about Manchester City transfer

Sergi Gomez has warned Martin Zubimendi about joining Manchester City and insists he is better off staying at Real Sociedad.

Gomez signed for Man City in 2022 for £11 million although the move did not go to plan as the defender made just 18 appearances under Pep Guardiola.

The Spanish international struggled to ever break into the team under Guardiola and spent almost two years just sitting on the sidelines.

Zubimendi could run the risk of having the same thing happen as Rodri will most likely have returned to full fitness in the summer after suffering an ACL injury.

Gomez told Diario AS: “I’ve already told him that it’s not that bad, that at Real [Sociedad] you’re much better off.”

TBR Football reported back in December that no Premier League bids were expected for Zubimendi in January as he was not showing a willingness to move to England.

Pep Guardiola on Nico O’Reilly playing holding midfield

Guardiola has claimed that one new option Man City have for the holding midfield spot is Nico O’Reilly after he impressed against Salford City.

City thrashed their local rivals 8-0 in the FA Cup with several youngsters being given their chances to shine.

O’Reilly was certainly one of the players who took his chance as he scored his first goal for the club, despite featuring at left-back.

After the match, Guardiola said: “I’m really pleased for Jahmai [Simpson-Pusey] and Nico [O’Reilly] – who played for the first time in his life at left-back.

“He has the conditions to play holding midfielder, but maybe he doesn’t believe he can play this. He’s another talent that we trust a lot.”
