What Mane said about Sarr as Leeds reportedly close in on deal

Leeds United appear to be one team to watch in the final days of the summer transfer window, with reports on Wednesday claiming that they are close to agreeing a deal for Ismaila Sarr.

Sarr is one of the best players in the Championship. And he outlined his quality by scoring from the halfway line in Watford’s clash on Monday. But perhaps that may prove to be one of his final appearances for the Hornets.

Foot Mercato reported on Wednesday that Leeds were close to agreeing a fee with Watford for Sarr. Meanwhile, talks over personal terms are well down the line.

Of course, supporters may be wary of getting carried away. But it does appear that there may be something in the rumours, with Tuttomercatoweb reporting that Sarr was one step away from a £25 million move to Elland Road.

Sarr would arguably be a very smart addition. He is predominantly a winger. But he is also capable of playing up front, so he could provide competition for Patrick Bamford.

And one player who would probably back Sarr to be a good signing for Jesse Marsch’s men is Sadio Mane.

The pair are good friends having played for Senegal together. And Mane expressed his disappointment that he did not join Liverpool in the window where he moved to Vicarage Road.

He also explained what he told Andy Robertson about the winger following his switch to the Premier League.

“He’s rapid. I think defenders will struggle,” Mane told The Athletic. “Last time I was speaking to Robbo (Andy Robertson) I said, ‘Watford have a really good player. I will need to help you more otherwise Ismaila Sarr will kill you, because he is a good dribbler and very, very fast.’”

Some Leeds fans may be a little frustrated by the links with Sarr. The two positions where Leeds need to strengthen most is up front and at left-back.

Sarr’s best position is arguably out wide. And Leeds do have players who can play up front, such as Rodrigo and Sam Greenwood. So the versatile option may not appeal to some.

But Sarr is an amazing player. If Mane was left rueing the fact that he did not join Liverpool a few years ago, there is every chance that he could be a huge success should he now move to Leeds.
