Liverpool have failed in their pursuit to sign Martin Zubimendi this summer after the Spaniard’s proposed move to Anfield collapsed.
Zubimendi will not be coming to Liverpool, and it’s currently unclear exactly why this deal fell apart.
There have been some suggestions that Liverpool may have tried to change the structure of the Zubimendi deal, but according to Simon Hughes, speaking on the Walk On Podcast, that isn’t the case.
Indeed, the journalist says that Liverpool are adamant that they didn’t try to change the Zubimendi deal in any way.

What Liverpool are denying about Martin Zubimendi deal
Hughes shared what he knows about the Real Sociedad midfielder and his failed move to Anfield.
“There has been a lot of debate about whether or not Liverpool were trying to restructure the deal and that led to a delay, but Liverpool are adamant that is not the case, I don’t know if Sociedad are saying differently, but they don’t need to say anything at the moment because they’re very happy the player is staying at the club,” Hughes said.
Zubimendi deal would’ve been straightforward
Liverpool deny that they tried to change the structure of the Zubimendi deal, and it’s easy to believe this briefing from the Reds.
Indeed, with a £52m release clause in place, this deal to sign Zubimendi would’ve been very simple to finalise.
However, agreeing terms with the player has proven to be a problem, and, ultimately, Zubimendi has decided to stay loyal to his boyhood club.
Zubimendi is now potentially set to sign a new contract with the La Liga outfit, and Liverpool’s search for a new defensive midfielder goes on.
Zubimendi to Liverpool looked as though it was heading in the right direction, but, sadly, the Reds couldn’t finalise this deal, and now, they’re back to square one in the transfer window.
