What Jose Mourinho said about Mikel Arteta at Arsenal two years ago is now very interesting

What former Tottenham Hotspur boss Jose Mourinho said about Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta two years ago is now very interesting.

Mourinho’s Spurs side beat the Gunners 2-0 back in December 2020 and headed back to the top of the Premier League table with the win.

A masterful counter-attacking display proved too much for Arteta’s men on the day, with first-half goals from Harry Kane and Heung-Min Son securing three points for Spurs.

The loss left Arsenal 15th in the table at the time and it was their sixth defeat in their previous nine Premier League games.

It’s a stark reminder of some of the difficult patches Arteta has battled through. But Mourinho was actually full of praise for the Spaniard at the time.

Despite Arsenal’s poor form and worrying position in the table, Mourinho claimed Arteta would lead Arsenal back to the very top of English football.

His comments may have seemed slightly patronising to some at the time, but they are ringing true right now.

What Mourinho said about Arteta

Mourinho spoke to Sky Sports following his side’s impressive 2-0 win at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

“I think it was a big game, not just because it was Tottenham-Arsenal,” he said

“I want to give good words, congratulations, to Mikel Arteta because he gave us a very difficult game. Tactically they are very good, very well organised.

“They gave us problems, problems that we managed to resolve. They have a good tactical courage and incredible spirit. They are a good team and he is a good coach.

“We were reading the game and making the changes to win it because 2-0 was in our hands against a great and difficult opponents but I believe my boys deserve it.

“I can imagine tomorrow the headlines will be about them not being in a good position in the table but I believe with these players and Mikel Arsenal will be Arsenal again.” as transcribed by the Daily Star

Arteta’s Arsenal side did go on to finish below Spurs that season, but only by one point. And Mourinho had been sacked by Tottenham just a few weeks before.

But the Portuguese boss’ comments about Arteta are looking right on the money now.

Arsenal are flying this season and currently sit five points clear at the top of the Premier League. Arteta has been backed through some poor spells of form by the Gunners board and it is now paying off.
