What Jose Mourinho previously said about Tottenham star he now wants

Jose Mourinho may offer Tottenham Hotspur the chance to offload Harry Winks in January, with reports this week claiming that Roma want the midfielder.

What’s the story?

Winks could be handed the opportunity to leave Spurs in the winter. The 25-year-old has struggled to secure game-time under Nuno Espirito Santo.

Calciomercato reports that both Roma and Inter Milan want Winks. Of course, a move to the Giallorossi would see the Tottenham academy graduate link up with a familiar face.

Winks did not actually have the best time playing under Mourinho while the Portuguese was at the helm in North London.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, he was linked with a move away ahead of the previous January transfer window.

But when asked about his future, Mourinho insisted that he wanted to keep hold of the midfielder.

“A player that I like, a player that I need, a player that the squad needs,” he said, as reported by Football London.

“A player with a contract for a few years. A player we don’t want to sell, a player we don’t want to loan. So if somebody is working on that they are losing time.”

Winks needs Tottenham exit, but reuniting with Mourinho would be gamble

It looks to be best for all parties if Winks leaves Spurs in one of the upcoming windows.

He turns 26 in February. He is no longer a young player who can set his sights on developing considerably in the coming years.

So he needs a move while he is on the periphery of Nuno’s plans.

Having said that, a move to the Italian capital would be a risk.

Winks played two of the next three league games after Mourinho’s comments about him staying.

However, he played no part in the next seven games. In fact, the win over Crystal Palace proved to be his only league appearance between the end of January and Mourinho’s departure in April.

Winks needs to go somewhere where he will play. His track record with Mourinho would hint that regular game-time with Roma would not be a given by any means.
