What is next for Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard?

MK Dons (Manager)

Just when you thought Gerrard to Newcastle was a slightly left-field rumour, the news then breaks that Steven Gerrard has apparently had contact with the MK Dons board over the vacant manager position. To dive straight into management in a league one relegation battle would be a huge risk. After all Gerrard has no experience of football at this level. He would have a tough job on, for his first management role. Also it is unclear at this stage whether he would continue to play if he got the job. It seems unlikely, as I would think he would want to focus solely on managing the club, which in itself will be a daunting experience.

Dons chairman Peter Winkleman has said that he wants to eventually take the club into the Premier League, so the ambition from the club is there. Also, Gerrard’s stock could only rise as a manager, if he took on this role. It’s a first job without a huge amount of pressure, but big potential gains. MK Dons is also the club that gave Paul Ince and Roberto Di Matteo their first jobs as managers, so they are willing to give young coaches that first chance. And also the time they need to get things moving in the right direction.

If Gerrard is serious about wanting to move into management as soon as possible, this could be a great opportunity. If he still has something to offer on the pitch at a high level then I can’t see him taking the job. But throwing his hat into the MK Dons ring, might be a sign that Gerrard is determined to make it as a manager, in which case why not get started?

Likeliness Rating: 5/10

Wherever Gerrard next ends up, it will be hugely interesting to see how long he keeps up playing. Retirement is looming for one of the greatest English players of the last 20 years.
