What is next for Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard?

Liverpool

The elephant in the room, when it comes to Gerrard’s next club. After all, why not just go back? Pretend his disaster of a final game against Crystal Palace never happened. Finally win the title, and shut people up once and for all about ‘that’ slip. Retire at where it all begun and be given a nice, cushy job in Jurgen Klopp’s backroom staff. He may be thinking this already on his flight back from LA.

Clearly I’m sure a part of Steven Gerrard would love nothing more than to return to Liverpool FC. Its probably the same for most Liverpool fans. Not just any Liverpool team either, but one that has started the season like a train, and look like serious contenders for silverware. If Jürgen Klopp wants to keep to good feeling firmly cemented at Anfield, then bringing back a club legend is certainly a way to do it.

But there are some serious questions that make it seem doubtful. Firstly, would he even play? If Gerrard really does still want to get game time, at a decent level, then he should not go back. Klopp has improved Liverpool hugely in the space of 12 months, because he has stuck to his own style of play. The amount of pressing the Liverpool midfield and attack have to do under the German is bordering on ridiculous. A 27 year old, dynamic Gerrard would be a perfect fit for the ‘gegenpress system’. A 36 year old Gerrard, probably isn’t.

He would almost certainly be left out of the big games, where Klopp may not trust him to still do the job. Yes there is a chance to finally get a Premier League winners medal, but would Gerrard feel he has truly earned it. He is already a legend for both Liverpool and England. He won’t feel the need to prove this by riding the coattails of the Klopp’s current team.

Also Klopp would not be doing himself or his team any favours by bringing Gerrard back. Signing a past legend would not really be seen as a forward step, by many observers. At worst it could even damage the dressing-room dynamic of the new squad. How would Jordan Henderson feel about captaining Steven Gerrard? Could that really work?

From a sentimental viewpoint this move would be brilliant, but Jürgen does not seem the over-sentimental type. Unless a coaching role is heavily involved, and playing becomes secondary, this move looks like it would be a bad one for all involved.
