‘What is he thinking?’: Jamie Carragher far from impressed with what £25m Tottenham man did in first-half today

Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher was far from impressed with what Tottenham Hotspur defender Emerson Royal did in the first-half against Nottingham Forest today.

Emerson joined Spurs from Barcelona for a fee worth £25.8 million last summer (BBC) and has improved under boss Antonio Conte.

The 23-year-old has been Conte’s first-choice right wing-back this season, despite competing with Matt Doherty and Djed Spence.

But Carragher was not impressed with what Emerson did in the eighth minute against Forest today.

Carragher far from impressed with Emerson

Brennan Johnson put a delightful cross into the Tottenham penalty area but the ball went all the way through.

And it appeared to be going out of play, but Emerson made a rash tackle that handed the Reds a free-kick in a dangerous position.

Forest didn’t manage to make anything of the opportunity but Carragher was not impressed while co-commentating on the game on Sky Sports

“What is he thinking? Stupid challenge,” Carragher said.

“He’s got a habit of doing things like that, Emerson Royal.”

Emerson joined Spurs as a full-back but has had to adapt his game to try and play as a wing-back under Conte.

The Brazilian has often been underwhelming going forward, but has been pretty solid defensively for Conte’s men.

The right-back did not offer much of a threat going forward once again today but did defend well, apart from the moment in the first-half.

Spurs were second-best for most of the opening half but went into the break 1-0 up thanks to a Harry Kane goal.

Kane then missed a penalty early in the second-half as Dean Henderson denied him a second goal from the spot.

But the England captain went on to seal all three points for Conte’s men as he headed home an excellent cross from Richarlison.

Conte will be delighted with his side’s start to the season as they made it three wins out of four today.
