Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp handed Harvey Elliott a start against Inter Milan last night and that surprised Simone Inzaghi.
The Reds flew to Italy to take on the Nerazzurri in the Champions League at the San Siro. It was a very difficult game for Liverpool, but their quality showed in the end as they scored twice in the last 15 minutes to pick up a 2-0 win.
Roberto Firmino scored the first in the 75th minute before Mo Salah doubled the lead just eight minutes later. Inzaghi would’ve prepared his side for those two players, but it seems like he wasn’t sure why Klopp went with Elliott from the start.
Here’s what the Inter Milan boss was overheard saying before the game.
What Simone Inzaghi told Marcelo Brozovic about Harvey Elliott
In the tunnel at the San Siro, just as Inter Milan players were about to head out for their warm-ups, the cameras caught Inzaghi in conversation with his trusted midfield general Marcelo Brozovic.
The cameras of Italian streaming platform Mediaset Infinity, as per TMW, caught the audio of Inzaghi’s message to the Croatian and it was all about young Elliott.
“Watch out for Elliott. They put that boy in midfield, perhaps to mark you as a man,” the Inter Milan boss reportedly told Brozovic before the game started yesterday.

TBR View:
It’s always interesting to hear managers’ instructions to players before or during the games and Inzaghi’s message to Brozovic yesterday was no different.
The Croatian runs the midfield for Inter and limiting him usually weakens the Nerazzurri. It’s natural for Inzaghi to think Elliott was there to man-mark Brozovic, but the Liverpool teenager’s role was more attack-minded.
Sadly, last night wasn’t Elliott’s greatest display in a Liverpool shirt and he was withdrawn after 59 minutes.
The youngster, labelled as a ‘very exciting young talent‘ by Gary Lineker, didn’t have a great game, but it is important to understand that it’s never easy for a teenager to make things happen at the San Siro, one of the most difficult places for a visiting player in Europe.
