Kolo Touré
When Kolo Touré arrived at Liverpool in the summer of 2013 on a two-year contract, you would not have found many people of the belief that he would still be there in 2016, and still fewer thinking that he would be in line to start for the club in a European final. Nevertheless, that is exactly the situation, and now the question is whether Touré’s association with Liverpool will continue beyond this summer transfer window.
According to reports, the player is indeed looking to extend his time at the club if at all possible, but what is currently less clear is in what capacity this will be in. Liverpool’s number four is a very valuable member of the dressing room, blatantly keeping his team-mates’ morale as high as possible, and for this reason alone, his presence amongst the squad should be respected. Touré has been praised for this aspect of his character at whichever club he has been performing for at the time, and The Reds would be rather short-sighted to discard this sort of contribution.
Will the Ivorian be able to bow out of his career at Anfield in a blaze of glory, having just helped to marshal the back-line in a victory against Sevilla? Only time will tell, but it seems almost certain that he will start alongside Dejan Lovren – injury permitting – and you can be sure that the much-loved centre-half will not be lacking desire. Even if this match in Basel does signal the end of his playing career for Liverpool, it is my belief that it would be remiss of Jurgen Klopp and The Reds’ management if they were to allow Touré to move on. With an exceptionally youthful core now coming to the fore at Liverpool, that winning mentality and vast experience which Kolo Touré can offer is a factor which should not be overlooked.
