What Emery once said about Chambers with Aston Villa interested in boss

Aston Villa are interested in Unai Emery should they decide to sack Steven Gerrard and miss out on top target Mauricio Pochettino, according to a report from The Telegraph this week.

Gerrard is in a precarious situation with Villa one point above the bottom three in the Premier League. They have only won one of their last eight top-flight games.

Pochettino is reportedly their top target. But Emery is another name on their wishlist should Pochettino knock them back.

Calum Chambers may be keeping eye on reports with Aston Villa interested in Unai Emery

Emery, of course, is no stranger to the Premier League. And a move to Villa Park would see the Spaniard reunited with a couple of players he knows from his ill-fated tenure at Arsenal.

Emi Martinez got the chance to work with him during the latter stages of his spell at the Emirates. But there was another member of the Villa squad in his ranks in that time.

And it would appear that he is a big fan.

In September 2019, Emery lauded Calum Chambers after a Carabao Cup win over Nottingham Forest. Chambers had featured in both full-back roles in the game. And Emery could not praise him higher, it seems.

“He helped. He helped us in the training, in the dressing room and when you need him to play right-back, centre back, left-back like tonight, and if we can use him in the midfield also,” he said, as reported by Football London.

“His performance is starting with his attitude and his attitude is amazing.”

Emery’s knowledge of working with Chambers may be significant. The 27-year-old made a surprise move to Villa Park in the most recent January transfer window.

However, he has struggled for minutes under Gerrard this season. He has been an unused substitute in seven of their 10 Premier League games. And he was left out of the squad altogether for the trip to Leeds this month.

Chambers has not played since August. So he may be one player who benefits should the Villans decide to make a change and end up replacing Gerrard with Emery.
