If you’d had said at the start of January when Newcastle were being linked with nearly every player in Europe that Dan Burn would be the new favourite among the Toon Army, you’d have been called ridiculous.
However, just a few months down the line and that’s where Burn finds himself. The former Brighton man has been an astute signing by Eddie Howe and has put in one good performance after another in the black and white of Newcastle.

Last night against Southampton, the big defender was once again in his element. Burn produced another excellent performance on the whole, as the Mags climbed up to 14th in the table. And in typical defender fashion, he was spotted celebrating a clean-sheet more than a goal during the game.
As pointed out by the Shields Gazette, Burn was seen going mad when Joe Willock put in a late, game-saving block to ensure the three points were going back up north. And while Burn didn’t make the block himself, the report states how he celebrated it much like the Toon had just netted at the other end.
TBR’s View: Dan Burn Is Newcastle’s Unsung Hero
Among all the big money and the glamour names that will no doubt arrive in Newcastle in the coming years, you need those players who are the foundation of the club to really build. In Dan Burn, Newcastle and Eddie Howe appear to have got their man.
Like with Man City all those years ago, Newcastle are building slowly. Back then, City had players like Gareth Barry, James Milner, and Joleon Lescott. None were spectacular, but all did their job and knew the game. This is exactly how Dan Burn is turning out for the Toon.
In fact, if he keeps performing how he is, then Newcastle might have a job actually replacing him long-term.
