Flitcroft also moved to bring in Scottish striker, Nicky Clark, from Rangers. The Shakers reportedly beat off competition from League One rivals Southend and Peterborough for the 25-year-old’s signature.

Brought up in Glasgow, Clark started his career at Aberdeen, but after failing to make an appearance for the club’s first team, left for Peterhead in 2010, following a successful loan spell at the club. Clark was a permanent fixture for The Blue Toon, and despite only managing four goals in 27 appearances during 2010/11, managed to secure a transfer to Queen of the South.

The move appeared misjudged at first, with Clark failing to find the net in 30 league games as the Dumfries-based club were relegated from the Scottish Division One in 2011/12. However, his second season proved to be in stark contrast to the first, finding the net 40 times during 45 appearances as his side marched to the Division Two title.

Something appeared to have clicked for the forward, and it was no surprise when the blue half of Glasgow came calling in 2013. This was in a way, a step down for Clark, who would be plying his trade in the third tier again. However, the lure of playing for the Scottish giants, in front of 40,000 people every other week, proved to be too much for him. Despite scoring 30 seconds into his debut, Clark struggled to make an early impact at Ibrox, and often found himself on the bench.

Nevertheless, promotion followed for The Gers, with Clark even managing to score four times in one game, during a 6-1 hammering of Forfar. Nailing down a first team spot would prove to be difficult for the forward, but he did go on to score 18 goals during a total of 76 league appearances for the club, before being released this summer as Mark Warburton’s side prepare for life back in the Scottish Premiership.

Clark signs a two-year deal at Gigg Lane, and will provide further competition in The Shakers’ attacking ranks. Bury supporters will be hopeful that their new marksman can hold down a first team spot, in order to replicate the form he showed during his second season at Queen of the South. However, the Scottish third tier is a very different prospect to its English equivalent, and Clark will have to up his game if he is to compete with Leon Clarke as Bury’s chief goal threat this
season.

The Shakers open their League One campaign at home to Charlton Athletic on 6th August, and with one or two more signings anticipated in the coming weeks, it appears that Flitcroft has already completed a large portion of his transfer dealings. A squad appears to be taking shape, and with a number of trialists expected to feature in upcoming friendlies, things appear to be looking slightly more rosy around Gigg Lane.
