What Aston Villa sources are saying about signing Raheem Sterling from Chelsea this week

Aston Villa have been linked with a move for Raheem Sterling in recent days, with the Chelsea winger expected to leave before the transfer window closes.

The 29-year-old England international has found himself frozen out at Stamford Bridge just two years after Sterling made a £50m move from Manchester City to Chelsea, with the winger struggling to find his feet in west London.

As a result, an exit is on the horizon for the former Liverpool star, with Villa one of the clubs interested in signing Sterling as Chelsea frantically look for a suitor willing to take the four-time Premier League champion off their hands.

And Villa sources have now indicated where they stand in signing Sterling this week.

Villa distance themselves with late swoop for Sterling

According to the Times, Villa sources have distanced themselves with making a last-minute move for Sterling, though Unai Emery’s side remain interested in signing an attacker before the window shuts.

As per the report, Joao Felix was an option for Villa with the Portuguese international strongly rumoured with a move to Villa Park, though Chelsea ultimately won the race for the former Atletico Madrid wonderkid.

Indeed, Villa distancing themselves from Sterling could hint towards a move for a more traditional forward that could act as cover for Ollie Watkins, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin internally discussed at Villa Park.

Yet with a line now seemingly drawn into the sand regarding Sterling, Villa fans can focus on the next target that emerges for Emery’s side, much to the dismay of the Chelsea winger.

Time is running out for Sterling to find a move

On his day, Sterling is one of the best attackers in the Premier League and a talent that virtually every club in the division would love to have on their books given his record across the years.

Yet with Villa seemingly out of the running for Sterling, the forward does not have long left to organise an escape route out of Chelsea, with the England international in need of a new home after two frustrating years at Stamford Bridge.

The final few days of the window will be interesting for Sterling, and with Chelsea eager to sell, the attacker could find himself joining a club nobody could have expected in an attempt to save his career.
