Arsenal fans enjoyed a comfortable evening on Wednesday as the Gunners strolled to a simple 2-0 win over Luton.

Fans were understandably a bit nervous in the opening stages – given what happened in the title race last season – before Martin Odegaard eased any fears with a lovely strike in the 22nd minute, and Emile Smith Rowe forced an own goal to make it 2-0.

Before the win, supporters could be heard aiming a message towards Declan Rice as the Arsenal No.41 warmed up with his teammates at the Emirates Stadium…

What Arsenal fans chanted at Declan Rice before 2-0 win over Luton

Well, the Arsenal supporters have not even had the England international for an entire season yet – although he is already a firm fan favourite.

Cries of “we got you half price, we got you half price, Declan Rice we got you half price” could be hearing ringing around one corner of the Emirates Stadium as Arsenal warmed up, which left the £105m man with a big grin on his face.

Arsenal fans clearly believe the 25-year-old is worth at least £210m based on this chant, which speaks volumes about just how impactful he has been in north London.

Perry Groves even compared Rice’s effect on Arsenal to that of Virgil van Dijk at Liverpool.

The Netherlands international helped turn the Reds into a serious force after sealing a £75m move from Southampton back in January 2018 – winning the Premier League, UEFA Champions League, FA Cup, Carabao Cup, UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup during his time at Anfield so far.

Mikel Arteta will hope to see Rice accumulate a similar haul of trophies at Arsenal – so far, the signs are good.

Signing of the season?

A lot will depend on who wins the Premier League, although Rice is certainly in contention to go down as the signing of the season.

Of course, £105m is a huge amount of money – it represents the eighth largest fee in football history.

However – in context – it was a wise investment from Arsenal.

Rice is likely to have a decade remaining at the highest level given his outstanding fitness levels and clean injury history, while he could also drop back into the centre of defence in his older age.

That means the £105m deal could end up being worth around just £10m a season to Arsenal.

Putting the finances aside, signings should be measured on how impactful they are, and Rice has undoubtedly made the Gunners one of the most solid sides in Europe – no side have conceded fewer than Arsenal’s 24 concessions in 30 games this season.

Hopefully, Arsenal’s club record signing can end his debut campaign with at least one piece of silverware – it would be the least he deserves for his outstanding efforts.
