‘What are you talking about?': Pundit left stunned by what Rio Ferdinand has said about Ivan Perisic today

Patrice Evra was left stunned by what Rio Ferdinand said about Tottenham Hotspur wing-back Ivan Perisic on his YouTube channel today.

Perisic was a standout performer for Croatia at the World Cup as he helped his side reach the semi-final while playing in a more advanced role.

The 33-year-old got on the scoresheet in the last-16 as he scored a superb header, while he also provided three assists throughout the tournament.

The former Inter Milan star has been lining up at left wing-back for Tottenham this season but he proved he can still play in a more attacking role.

And Ferdinand has named Perisic in his World Cup team of the tournament at left-back, much to the dismay of his former Manchester United teammate Evra.

Ferdinand on Perisic

Ferdinand named his World Cup XI on his YouTube channel today, alongside Evra. But when the United legend selected Perisic as his left-back, it left Evra completely baffled.

“What? He’s not even a left-back,” Evra explained.

“What are you talking about Rio? You can’t say he is in front of Theo Hernandez for France and [Marcos] Acuna.”

Ferdinand responded: “Theo Hernandez was the weakest link for France every game.”

“But he has been decisive. He scored a goal and got three assists! We have to be careful when we talk about left-backs,” Evra replied.

The Frenchman conceded that he agreed with Ferdinand’s comments about Hernandez’s defensive capabilities. But he feels his attacking qualities outweigh his weaknesses.

Ferdinand eventually gave in and allowed Evra to pick the AC Milan star over Perisic after his contributions for France during their run to the final.

It was certainly a surprise to hear Ferdinand pick Perisic for the left-back role, especially as he didn’t play in the position throughout the tournament.

Nevertheless, the Croatian star did enjoy a brilliant campaign and Antonio Conte will be hoping he can produce similar performances when he returns to north London.

Perisic has been one of Tottenham’s most creative outlets this season, registering seven assists in 21 games. He’s achieved this without really hitting top form so far too, so you get the feeling there is plenty more to come from him in a Spurs shirt.
