Tottenham Hotspur boss Antonio Conte has revealed what he told Richarlison right before his Champions League debut against Marseille last night.

Spurs were made to work hard by the French giants. Marseille were definitely the better team in the first half, but a red card to Chancel Mbemba right after the break completely changed the game.

Richarlison broke his duck for Tottenham with a fine header in the 76th minute and scored an even better goal just five minutes later.

The Brazilian is the talk of the town at the moment following his brilliant performance last night, but Conte’s quick chat with him before the game may well be the reason why Richarlison stepped up and delivered.

In his press conference after the game last night, Conte said, as per Football London: “I’m very happy for Richy. He deserved to have a night like this.

“I remember when we signed him he said I can’t wait to hear the Champions League music and play in this competition. Not many words but important words for me.

“Today, I remembered this and I said to him, ‘Richy, I remembered what you said, this is your chance and you deserved this. Enjoy this and try to do your best’.

“He did his best, and he helped us get three points in a difficult game.”

There were many eyebrows raised when Tottenham decided to splash £60 million (Sky Sports) on Richarlison.

Several people believed that there’s no way the Brazilian will start games for Spurs with Son Heung-min, Harry Kane and Dejan Kulusevski all ahead of him.

However, Richarlison has already shown that he hasn’t joined Tottenham just to sit on the bench. He has made a real impact whenever he has come on as a substitute, and on his Champions League debut last night, he helped his side pick up a really important victory.

It’s still early days, but Richarlison is slowly proving to be an incredible signing for Spurs. Under Conte, he will only get better in the coming years.
