What Angel Di Maria said about Tottenham links in 2014, amid new reported interest

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly interested in raiding Mauricio Pochettino’s Paris Saint-Germain for Angel Di Maria after the Argentine entered the final six months of his contract – but his comments about Spurs from 2014 will not sit well among fans.

Di Maria, 32, remains a crucial part of the PSG side having starred for the French champions over the course of the last few seasons. The 104-time Argentina international has played 243 times for PSG, scoring 86 and and laying on 102 assists.

French newspaper L’Equipe claim – as per The Sun – that PSG want to keep the ex-Manchester United man and have offered him a contract. But Tottenham are keeping an eye on the situation as it unravels, with his contract still unsolved.

But his signing might prove unpopular among supporters and that is because of his comments about being linked with Tottenham back in 2014. As per the Evening Standard, Di Maria claimed he was “hurt” by being linked with Spurs.

“It hurts when you’re always doing your best for your club and then you hear that you might be going to Tottenham,” he said, while at Real Madrid under the guidance of Carlo Ancelotti. Hardly what Tottenham fans want from an incoming signing.

TBR’s view – Tottenham fans should forgive and forget

If there is any chance of them getting an experienced Di Maria for a couple of seasons, they should forget about what he has said in the past and welcome him to the club with open arms – that is how good a footballer the Argentine is.

Set-pieces, goals, assists, passing, dogged South American determination and enormous footballing intelligence, Di Maria is one of the best attacking players in Europe. As he grows slightly older, he has been moved into the 10 role on occasion.

If Spurs can get him, they’ve got to sign him. Forget his comments, £44million man (ESPN) Di Maria would be a wonderful addition to Tottenham.
