What Ange Postecoglou did in his press conference after Tottenham 4-1 Aston Villa

Ange Postecoglou oversaw a second win of the week after watching his Tottenham side hammer Aston Villa on Sunday.

Spurs came back from 1-0 down to secure a 4-1 victory, just days after the north Londoners impressively knocked Manchester City out of the Carabao Cup with a 2-1 win on Wednesday.

The result moves Tottenham up to seventh in the Premier League table.

Ange Postecoglou press conferences have often been quite spiky since the Australian swapped Celtic for Tottenham – but he delivered a “beautiful” moment instead on Sunday after speaking to the media.

Ange Postecoglou pays tribute to Ugo Ehiogu

Sunday’s 4-1 victory over Aston Villa marked what would have been the 52nd birthday of Ugo Ehiogu.

The man who managed Tottenham’s U23 side from 2014 up until his death in April 2017 was a hugely popular figure at Spurs, and seemingly had a positive influence on everybody around him.

Postecoglou did not allow himself to forget about Ehiogu amidst the euphoria of beating Aston Villa, as revealed by George Sessions of PA Sport on X (previously known as Twitter).

The journalist wrote: “Beautiful finish to Ange Postecoglou’s press conference as he – unprompted – mentions how important it was to win on Ugo Ehiogu’s birthday. Revealed Matty Wells spoke to the players this week about the influence the late Spurs coach had on him and the club. Classy touch.”

As quoted by Football London, the 59-year-old specifically said: “I’m really proud of the lads. It was an important day for us today, because it’s also the birthday of the late Ugo Ehiogu and he had a big influence on Matty Wells (Assistant Manager) here at the club.

“I know he played for Villa but he was obviously a coach at our football club. Matty spoke really strongly about him. When you hear things like that, and how people affect your life, it helps give clarity to the players about what we’re trying to do here. Obviously for his wife and his son probably a tough day, but hopefully they get a little bit of cheer from the fact Wellsy made a really important point, that he may be gone but he’s not forgotten.”

A touching sentiment – to say the least.

Ange Postecoglou understands Tottenham

Say whatever you want about Postecoglou being wedded to his high defensive line and his occasionally prickly responses to interviewers – but he totally understands what it means to be Spurs.

Comments like his remark on Ehiogu will go a long way to endearing himself to the Tottenham supporters – who John McGinn praised – and will also, presumably, make Spurs players warm to him as well, potentially increasing effort levels in matches as he becomes a manager they would run through brick walls for.

Hopefully – after a few setbacks in recent weeks – Tottenham can keep this momentum going after impressive wins over Manchester City and Aston Villa.
