'What a signing'; 'One of the best': These Tottenham fans loved reminiscing after club's tweet

Eleven years ago today, Tottenham Hotspur signed Rafael van der Vaart from Real Madrid.

The now-retired Dutchman cost £8m in 2010 (Sky Sports) and his two seasons in London still live long in the memory.

Van der Vaart only appeared 77 times for the Lilywhites (Transfermarkt), but he provided plenty of memories for the adoring fans.

The 38-year-old helped Spurs to 5th and 4th-placed finishes in the Premier League in 2010/11 and 11/12.

He even top-scored for the club in his debut campaign, with 15 goals in all competitions as he helped Tottenham to the Champions League quarter-finals.

Ranking EVERY Premier League Centre-Back Partnership

Many Tottenham fans, when looking back on the VDV era, are now wishing they had a player of his creative ability at the club now.

The Lilywhites haven’t had a proper #10 on their books since the sale of Christian Eriksen in January 2020 (BBC).

That’s something that clearly bothers the supporters, who would love to see a van der Vaart figure in North London.

When thinking of van der Vaart’s time at Tottenham, many memories spring to mind.

The ex-Ajax man was a key figure in Tottenham’s first ever win at the Emirates, scoring and registering two assists as the Lilywhites won 3-2 in November 2010.

Since van der Vaart’s signing, Tottenham have gone from strength to strength, even after his departure, as the club have gone on to play five seasons of Champions League football since his signing.

While it has now been 11 years since he signed, and nine since his departure, it is clear that the fans won’t be forgetting the classy Dutchman anytime soon.
