Shane Long scored the fastest goal in Premier League history as Southampton stepped one point closer to safety.
Southampton drew 1-1 with Watford after Andre Gray scored a late equaliser but it was a night to remember for Long.
The Republic of Ireland international needed less than eight seconds to get on the scoresheet, charging down Craig Cathcart’s clearance and finishing his chance well.
Long broke Ledley King’s record which has lasted for nearly 20 years. The ex-Tottenham defender took 10 seconds to score against Bradford in 2000.
And Long’s goal helped Southampton to another vital point in their quest for safety. With three games remaining, the Saints are six points clear of Cardiff City with favourable goal difference.
Long has been yet another player transformed under the stewardship of Ralph Hasenhuttl.
The 32-year-old was often criticised for running a lot with little end product. But after scoring his second goal of the season against Liverpool recently, he now has three in four matches.
Long took a knock last night but Southampton fans will be hoping it is not serious as he looks to finish the job and confirm Premier League safety.
Here are several tweets from Saints fans praising Long’s recent performances and his record-breaking goal.

I think Shane is making a late run for the Golden boot……… if he keeps scoring every 8 seconds until the end of the season he may get it !!!!!!!!
