‘What a fantastic appointment’, ‘superb’: Some Spurs fans erupt over new coaching addition

A number of Tottenham Hotspur fans have taken to Twitter to congratulate Chris Powell and Ryan Mason after Spurs shared an update on the club’s academy management and coaching structure ahead of the new season.

With John McDermott leaving his role as Tottenham head of coaching and development to join the FA in June, Spurs have announced a shake-up of their youth department following an internal review.

Academy manager Dean Rastrick will assume overall responsibility for the youth programme, while former England defender and boyhood Spurs fan Powell takes up a newly-created position as head of coaching from Under-17 to Under-23 level.

Powell has previously managed Charlton, Huddersfield and Southend and is currently a coach under Gareth Southgate with the England national team.

He will work closely with Mason, a Spurs academy graduate and former first-team player, who has stepped up from Under-19 coach to become head of player development at N17.

Rastrick, Powell and Mason are joined by existing staff Matt Taylor, Wayne Burnett, Paul Bracewell and Perry Suckling in the club’s new academy leadership team.

Nigel Gibbs, meanwhile, has left his role as assistant head of player development to take up a coaching position at Belgian outfit Cercle Brugge.

Powell’s appointment and Mason’s promotion were well received by the Spurs fanbase, with some supporters wishing the duo well on social media:
