Rodrigo Bentancur made his return to action for Tottenham over the weekend, and there’s reason to be excited about the Uruguayan’s return.
Tottenham are top of the Premier League at the moment, but many detractors are still not buying Spurs as contenders due to their supposed lack of squad depth.
Tottenham don’t have the deepest squad in the league, but with no European football and no Carabao Cup, they don’t necessarily need a Chelsea-sized squad of 30 players.
In all honesty, Spurs’ depth isn’t as bad as some make out, Bentancur’s return at the weekend highlighted their midfield riches, and speaking on The Game Football Podcast, Gregor Robertson stated that Bentancur’s return has changed his perception of this Spurs team a little bit.

Bentancur had been forgotten
Robertson spoke about the Uruguayan after his return.
“Even then, my perceptions of this team are changing a bit. Bentancur has come back and how good of a player is Bentancur? We’ve forgot about him and he’s come back. You have him and Hojbjerg. Bissouma and Sarr are so important to the system, but suddenly there’s a little bit more strength there,” Robertson said.
Tottenham stronger than people think
Robertson is right, Spurs’ depth is a bit better than many give them credit for.
Yes, it’s not quite at the level of Man City or Arsenal, but just look at some of their players who’ve not really played this season.
Hugo Lloris, like him or not, is a World Cup winning captain, Eric Dier has been an England regular for nearly a decade, and Ryan Sessegnon, once upon a time, was the hottest young property in the country.
It’s not ideal, but it’s far from being a disaster, and if Spurs’ title challenge is to hinge on their depth, they might have a chance of being in this race after all.
