Jack Wilshere will have excited West Ham United fans on Monday morning by posting an injury update on Instagram – but is it too little, too late?
The 27-year-old has failed to play for West Ham’s senior side since December 1, in the form of a five-minute cameo role against Newcastle United. He has played just five times this season, clocking up 339 minutes of action.
A long-standing ankle injury has sidelined the 34-time England international for almost the entire campaign. But with a handful of matches left, Wilshere is close to a return.
That is after the ex-Arsenal star turned out for the club’s Under-23 side and lasted for the majority of the match, as Dan Kemp scored a late winner to beat Leicester City. Wilshere posted on Instagram on Monday morning.

But is it too little, too late? Wilshere is earning an enormous £100,000 at West Ham (Spotrac), and is the joint-third highest earner alongside Marko Arnautovic. Five appearances this season is certainly not worth the contract he is on.
Wilshere signed a contract at the London Stadium until the summer of 2021. But if the ex-Arsenal man remains injury plagued, are they really willing to continue paying his six-figure salary until then?
One more chance should be afforded to Wilshere to prove he can overcome injury and begin to show why the Hammers signed him. If another long-term problem strikes, the Hammers board have to step in.
