Report: West Ham keen to sign £14m man, but second-placed side enthuse rival offer

West Ham United are keen to sign Barcelona defender Junior Firpo this summer, according to Calciomercato.

The Hammers are monitoring Firpo’s situation at the Camp Nou after the left-back endured a difficult season under Ronald Koeman. He featured just 18 times across all competitions and started only three of his seven La Liga outings.

Barcelona now hope to sell Firpo in the summer transfer window to recoup some of what they paid Real Betis. The Dominican cost €18million (£15.5m) plus €12m (£10m) in add-ons back in 2019.  But is now available for an initial €16m (£14m), per Sport.

West Ham face strong competition for the transfer of Firpo this summer with AC Milan also pushing for his arrival. The Serie A runners-up are keen on the Spain-born full-back as they look for a competent backup to Theo Hernandez.

Milan chiefs Paolo Maldini and Frederic Massara have already held discussions with Barcelona over a potential loan deal for Firpo. But the Camp Nou outfit are currently holding out for permanent offers for the 24-year-old.

West Ham have also held talks with Barcelona to discuss Firpo’s situation. Sport claimed earlier this month that the Irons and Southampton were pushing to reach an agreement. However, no terms were finalised for the defender to move to England.

TBR’s view: West Ham need to increase Firpo efforts

West Ham have long held an interest in bringing Firpo to the London Stadium. ESPN reported in January that David Moyes had explored a deal, but was unable to convince the defender as he wanted assurances over his game time.

Milan also sounded out Firpo’s situation over the winter as they began their search for Hernandez’s understudy. The fact that they have now returned to enthuse Barcelona of their interest will prove worrying for West Ham.

The Irons, then, need to increase their efforts to sign Firpo if Moyes wants the Dominican in east London next season. Firpo will have a point to prove wherever he ends up after two difficult years at the Camp Nou, but may not accept being Aaron Cresswell’s backup.
