West Ham United have confirmed the departure of Pedro Obiang on their official website, with the midfielder joining Serie A outfit Sassuolo.

The Hammers have recouped £7.2 million, according to Sky Sports, and the midfielder leaves following four years with the Hammers.

Obiang made 116 appearances for West Ham and netted three goals in the process.

His 30-yard thunderbolt against Tottenham during the 2017/18 campaign won the club’s Goal of the Season award.

The defensive midfielder struggled to hold down a regular spot in Manuel Pellegrini’s midfield last season.

With the club’s options in the middle of the park now luxurious, Obiang has taken the decision to head off for a new challenge.

Probably the highlight of his time with the Londoners was helping the club to qualify for European competition in 2016 under Slaven Bilic’s management.

The Equatorial Guinea international seems to have adhered himself to the club’s supporters during his time with the Premier League outfit.

Following the announcement of his departure, several West Ham supporters took to Twitter to thank the midfielder and wish him well at his next club.

The move is probably best for all parties but Obiang proved a decent servant to West Ham in recent memory.

Here is a selection of tweets following his decision to transfer to Sassuolo:
