West Ham should tread carefully with their reported interest in Newcastle United midfielder Isaac Hayden.
According to the Daily Star, Manuel Pellegrini’s side are keen on Newcastle’s enforcer and are prepared to lead the bidding with Brighton for his signature.
The report details the wantaway central midfielder could cost over £20million to prize away from St James’ Park.
Hayden has been an important player in Rafael Benitez’s side this campaign and has proven he can make an impact in the top flight.
The 24-year-old enforcer is a defensive midfielder that helps protect his back four and has been in excellent form in the last few months to help his team move clear of relegation trouble.
Hayden has the potential to play at a higher level and West Ham have to be aiming to climb into the European spots next year under Pellegrini.
But there is no guarantee that he could make an immediate impact at the Hammers and previously failed to cut the grade at Arsenal.
Hayden has had spells of strong form in a Newcastle shirt, but it’s only in the last few months that he’s really looked like a force in the top flight.
His £20million-plus valuation seems extremely steep and it would instantly put a lot of pressure on his shoulders if he did arrive.
Declan Rice would be his immediate challenger at West Ham and he would have plenty of work to do to overtake him.
