West Ham: Striker set Friday deadline; £7m bid for winger; Barcelona competition

Published

on

After it had previously seemed that a deal for AC Milan striker Carlos Bacca was dead in the water, rumours seem to suggest that the move is back on, with the club’s bosses giving the Colombian a new deadline of Friday to decide on the move. The Express report that his agent has refused to rule out a move to London after offers from Spain and bigger English clubs did not come forward as expected and the Hammers increased the wages on offer.

The Irons are clearly desperate for the 29-year-old’s signature as they search for a prolific forward, with Bacca scoring 20 in 43 last season. Fans may not like the forward’s reluctance to join the club, but would surely be easily convinced if he can find form in claret and blue, much like Dimitri Payet did a year ago. If the striker rejects the club again, then it’ll be back to the drawing board to find a partner for the likes of Andre Ayew and Andy Carroll.

Such a move could be of even more importance as the IBT reported that a move for Argentinean forward Jonathan Calleri is in jeopardy. The youngster had previously said that a move was imminent and it seemed that the deal would be confirmed after his participation at the Olympics came to an end, but the IBT claim that Barcelona have shown an interest in the former Boca Juniors striker which may tempt him to change his mind.

It seems unlikely that the 22-year-old would renege on the deal at this late a stage, with seemingly only an announcement expected, but if there is one club who could persuade him then it’s likely to be one of the biggest in world football. If Calleri did pull out of the deal it would be a blow, as the Irons looked to have secured one of the brightest young talents in world football.

It now also seems that a bid has been made for Lyon’s Algerian winger Rachid Ghezzal. Sky Sports report that a £6.8 million bid for the 24-year-old, whose performances in Ligue 1 have seen him likened to Leicester‘s Riyad Mahrez. With just one year left on his contract, it seems likely that the two clubs will be able to negotiate a deal but it remains to be seen if this opening offer, confirmed by the French club’s president, is enough.

Ghezzal would certainly be an exciting addition and would add to an area Slaven Bilic has targeted for improvements with Sofiane Feghouli and Gokhan Tore already signed up as the Croatian boss adds pace and skill to his wide areas. Ghezzal would add to that and will be hoping to replicate the success of his compatriot Mahrez.

Ambitious swoop

Manchester United defender Chris Smalling has been ever-present in Jose Mourinho’s outfit this season, but failed to earn a spot in Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the World Cup. And West Ham are considering using his omission to their advantage, as they weigh up a potential move for his services this summer, according to Metro.

The club are set to back Manuel Pellegrini with “record funds” this summer (BBC Sport), which will allow the ex-Manchester City boss to be ambitious with his targets in the market, and Smalling would represent a serious coup in east London.

Jose Mourinho has identified an additional central defender as key priority this summer, and the Englishman could find himself facing a limited role at Old Trafford next term if he stays.

Set back for winger

Pellegrini has suffered a setback in his quest to sign Felipe Anderson from Lazio this summer, according to Gianlucadimarzio.com, as both parties are currently unable to agree over financial issues.

According to the report, Lazio want £30.5 million as transfer fee plus £4.3 million in bonuses, but West Ham are currently unwilling to spend in excess of £26 million, as they look to bolster the squad in multiple areas.

Moreover, the Italian club are asserting that any deal must have a selling on fee for the Brazilian, meaning they would receive a percentage of the transfer fee, if West Ham were to sell the 25-year-old in the future.

Boost for defender

Nice have announced that long-spanning West Ham target Marlon Santos will not have to fulfil the initial expectation of two-loan seasons with Ligue 1 outfit, and will instead return to parent club Barcelona after completing his first year, according to Sky Sports.

A statement on Nice’s official website said: “In agreement with Barcelona, the Brazilian who was loaned to Nice last summer will not wear the Nice colours in 2018-19. He now returns to the Catalan club.”

Pellegrini will now likely revive his interest in the £22 million rated centre-back, while also courting Chris Smalling and Swansea defender Alfie Mawson.

Close on striker

Celtic are reportedly “progressing” with talks regarding a permanent deal for Paris Saint Germain striker Odsonne Edouard, but there’s “work to be done” according to a BBC Sport.

The 20-year-old spent last season on loan at Celtic from Paris St-Germain, scoring an impressive 11 goals and bagging 4 assists in 29 appearances. And Brendan Rodgers has decided he wants to land the Frenchman on a permanent basis.

The reports claim the French giants are after a hefty fee though, with the asking price in excess of £8 million.

Talks for midfielder

Celtic’s business doesn’t end there either. The club has reportedly held talks with Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Sean Clare, according to TeamTalk. Although they are facing stiff competition for the his signature.

And Rangers are among the 14 clubs courting the player this summer. However, the player is said to be keen on the idea of linking up with Brendan Rodgers, as his track-record of developing talent is seriously impressive – with Kieran Tierney, Moussa Dembele and Callum McGregor being the most recent examples.

The midfielder played 31 times last season, bagging two goals and three assists.

Former Hoop on the move

Former Celtic right-back Saidy Janko is a target for Portuguese champions Porto this summer, according to French newspaper L’Equipe.

The 22-year-old left Parkhead last summer to sign a four-year deal with Ligue 1 outfit Saint-Etienne, and his performances seem to have caught the attention of the Portuguese heavyweights

The ex-Manchester United man originally joined Celtic in 2015, but failed to establish himself as a first-team regular due to regular issues with injuries and a number of shaky performances.

Eboue’s off

Ivorian midfielder Eboue Kouassi looks set to leave Parkhead this summer with a loan move being most likely, although the 20-year-old hasn’t ruled out a permanent deal, should an attractive suitor call for his services, according to reports from The Sun.

Eboue has made as few as nine starts for the Scottish champions since making his £3 million move from Russian outfit FC Krasnodar, and is now desperate to play more regularly.

However, with captain Scott Brown ever-present in the heart of the Hoops’ midfield, Eboue has found it extremely difficult to develop under Brendan Rodgers and he’s not willing to risk a repeat next term.

Wishful thinking

Hoops fans have jumped on a cryptic Twitter message from ex-Milan striker Alexandre Pato, with some joking – and some actually believing – that he will join Rodgers’ outfit this summer.

The Brazilian posted a lone emoji of the shamrock on his page, and its close affiliation with Celtic – who’s badge contains a very similar flower – has led many to question his intentions, and whether the 28-year-old may be considering a move to Scotland.

Pato spent last term in China with Tianjin Quanjian and scored an impressive 20 goals in 30 games, and he would undoubtedly be a serious pull for Rodgers. However, a lengthy transfer saga is unlikely to begin with an emoji.
