19-year-old West Ham prospect could get first-team chance soon, he can play up-front - opinion

It’s well-known that West Ham have struggled to find a natural goalscorer during the Gold, Sullivan and Brady era, with this window being no exception.

Sebastien Haller left the London Stadium for Ajax in January 2021. Leaving Michail Antonio as the club’s only recognised striker for over a year. Although that has worked out well, for the most part, Antonio’s form has dipped in recent weeks, which has once again highlighted the club’s need for another centre-forward.

David Moyes himself has said the club have been looking for a striker ‘for the last two years’ [The Mail]. Sadly, they are notoriously hard to come by and are never cheap.

Perhaps the Scot could turn to the famous West Ham youth system if his side fails to land a striker before the window closes on January 31st.

There’s one name that stands out in particular – Armstrong Oko-Flex.

The 19-year-old joined the Hammers from Celtic in the summer, having previously played in the Arsenal youth. Seen as a player for the future he was immediately deployed into the Premier League 2 to apply his trade.

The Irishman hit the ground running, scoring a hattrick against his former club Arsenal in a 6-1 win. In total, he has amassed eleven goals and one assist in 16 Premier League 2 appearances. This makes him one of the top goalscorers in the league, with West Ham currently sitting in second place.

His preferred position is a winger but he also has no problem leading the line in attack.

He is yet to make a single appearance in the Premier League, though he was an unused substitute in December’s 2-0 loss against Arsenal.

West Ham are still among the goals

The Hammers have benefited from goals coming from different areas of the pitch, scoring 41 times so far this season.

Jarrod Bowen and Said Benrahma are no strangers to the score sheet. While Pablo Fornals is also enjoying his best goal-scoring season in a West Ham shirt. Not to mention Jesse Lingard’s inspired loan move and Tomas Soucek’s impressive 10-goal haul last season.

West Ham are still very much in the mix for a Champions League spot this season, but adding another source of goals will be crucial to their cause.

If they fail to land a striker or Jesse Lingard on a permanent deal, perhaps Oko-Flex could contribute to West Ham’s top four aspirations.
