Report: West Ham make their second move for 'very special' player, as Moyes seeks key addition

West Ham have submitted a bid worth £21m for Stade Reims striker Hugo Ekitike, according to le10sport.com

It is well known how much the East London side are in desperate need of a striker. Michail Antonio has been the club’s only recognised centre-forward since Sebastien Haller left for Ajax twelve months ago.

The Hammers are yet to bring in any new faces during the transfer window which closes at 23:00 on January 31st. However, reports coming out of France suggest David Moyes’ side are making moves in the French league.

According to the latest report, West Ham first submitted a bid worth £12.5m for the 19-year-old. This was rejected by Reims, as a result, the Hammers returned with an improved bid of £21m.

The 19-year-old, who has been described as ‘very special’ by former manager Oscar Garcia, has eight goals in eighteen Ligue 1 appearances, as well as three assists so far this season. He also fits the bill of what David Moyes looks for when recruiting players.

When asked about signing a striker in January Moyes said: “We’ve been trying to get someone who we think can give us competition for Mic for two years.’

‘This club has probably brought in more centre-forwards than anybody, many of them expensive and it has been hard to get them to work.

‘I want to add to it [the squad] but I’m not going to do it for the sake of it.”

It is believed West Ham’s latest bid is still an insufficient amount for Reims to sell their youngster. It is unknown whether the David Moyes’ side will return with a third bid for the 19-year-old. Although reports in 90 Mins suggest Newcastle, Chelsea and Arsenal are also interested in Ekitike.

The clock is ticking, and West Ham will need to make signings if they are to mount a serious top-four challenge.
