West Ham round-up: Manchester City defender wants move; goalkeeper secured for next season; Sullivan calls for improvement

West Ham could finally secure one of their defensive transfer targets in the summer as the Sun claim that Manchester City right-back Bacary Sagna is keen on a return to London, where he previously played for Arsenal, with it seeming increasingly likely that the Frenchman will not be offered a new contract in the summer by Pep Guardiola.

The 34-year-old could offer a short term solution for a real problem position for the Hammers this season, with Alvaro Arbeloa failing to resolve the issue on the right hand of defence, Sam Byram not yet convincing Slaven Bilic and Cheikou Kouyate the round peg being forced into a square hole.

However, one player who is set to see his contract extended is Spanish goalkeeper Adrian as the Sun say that the 30-year-old will have his contract extended for a further year to prevent him from leaving on a free this summer. It is an unexpected move given that Darren Randolph has overtaken him as first choice since November.

It may be a ploy by the club to ensure that they can sell their back up ‘keeper for a fee in the summer, with a return to Spain the most likely option for the former Real Betis shotstopper.

He may get a second chance soon though if the club’s defensive record continues to be one of the worst in the league, especially after co-chairman David Sullivan wrote on the club website demanding improvements, saying:

“Like you all, I was very disappointed and frustrated with the manner of our defeat at Bournemouth on Saturday. We went down there determined to bounce back from the Chelsea game, but we didn’t play as well as we know we can at Vitality Stadium. Slaven, the players and the staff all know we have to do better… We have conceded too many goals early in halves in recent games and… that situation cannot go on… I am sure that Slaven, his backroom staff and the team were not happy with what happened and they will think about it a lot over the next few days.”

Such poor defending cost the Irons dearly on Saturday as the visitors conceded three goals through woeful defending and gave away two penalties.
