West Ham United have reportedly moved for Gabriel Barbosa.
According to Sport Mediaset, the Hammers have put an offer to the forward’s parent club Internazionale, and are keen to sign him in January.
The man nicknamed ‘Gabigol’ is currently out on loan at his former club Santos after finding life tough in Serie A, but the Brazilian season is nearly over and he is due to return to the Nerazzurri in January.
He’s fared quite well since returning to his homeland, and has scored 25 goals in 49 appearances in total.
Obviously, the playing standard isn’t quite that of a European top five league, but it’s still as respectable tally.
The player will certainly be happy to return to some kind of form after struggling to make an impact at San Siro.
Gabigol is a risk worth taking for West Ham
If West Ham were successful in their pursuit of Gabigol then it would be an exciting signing for the club.
The player has struggled with Inter since moving there in 2016. He’s only made nine appearances for the club and appeared overawed by life in Italy and the transfer fee which took him there.
He’s now 22 and a bit more mature, meaning he may well start to realise his frightening potential.
He did lose his way, but Serie A is a hard league for young players to flourish.
West Ham are right to try and take a risk on a player once widely dubbed ‘the next Neymar’. That said, they should not be paying any huge fee demanded by Inter. Transfermarkt estimate his value at just €8 million (£7 million), which would absolutely be worth paying, although the Italians will surely want a bit more than that.
He’s the kind of flair player that can really get the crowd going.
With Felipe Anderson already at the club, there’s a chance Gabigol would be able to settle quite well and hit the ground running.
