West Ham United are reportedly keeping tabs on the situation surrounding Chelsea midfielder Billy Gilmour following the arrival of Thomas Tuchel at Stamford Bridge – and David Moyes’ previous comments on the Scot explains why.
Gilmour, 19, joined Chelsea’s academy from Rangers and has since gone through the Under-18 and reserve-team steps with ease. Making his senior debut under Frank Lampard, Gilmour has already played 17 times for Chelsea’s first team.
But following Lampard’s exit, £43k-a-week (Spotrac) Gilmour’s future has been placed into some doubt. Tuchel chose to use experience against Wolves on Wednesday night – with the likes of Reece James, Tammy Abraham and Mason Mount overlooked.
Gilmour was completely left out of the squad, and The Mirror have claimed that West Ham are looking at a potential loan deal for the uncapped Scottish midfielder. Moyes was quoted by BBC Sport last summer as saying he would love to sign Gilmour.
“The one [Scottish player] who if I could sign tomorrow I would is Billy Gilmour after his opening performances for Chelsea,” Moyes said. “He’s looked like a seasoned pro, he’s looked like somebody who’s hungry, who’s in love with the game.”

TBR’s view – Gilmour would be a top signing for the Hammers
But would he get game time? Chelsea could be open to Gilmour’s exit but only if the player is given a starting berth week in, week out. At West Ham, he probably would not start. Declan Rice and Tomas Soucek have formed a top partnership in midfield.
Club captain Mark Noble is first reserve for both of those players but even he has struggled to get into the side above Rice and Soucek. So, would Gilmour get a game at West Ham? Not as much as he would like, as he looks to impress at Euro 2021.
