West Ham reportedly want London-based star Cole labelled ‘massive in the dressing room’

West Ham reportedly want to raid Chelsea and take Antonio Rudiger to the London Stadium despite the Germany international remaining a crucial part of Frank Lampard’s side – and Joe Cole’s recent comments which will have supporters excited.

Rudiger, 27, is just one of a number of options at centre-back for Chelsea – along with new signing and veteran Brazil captain Thiago Silva. Kurt Zouma, Fikayo Tomori, Andreas Christensen and Cesar Azpilicueta are also options at centre-back.

According to a report from the Daily Mail, West Ham are keen on raiding Chelsea for the Germany international. It remains to be seen if Chelsea are willing to let £29million signing (BBC) Rudiger go, but the competition may see Lampard sanction a move.

The Hammers are desperate to avoid including a move for Rudiger in a deal that would see Declan Rice move to Stamford Bridge, but remain keen on the German. Cole, who played for both sides, explained how Rudiger is crucial in the dressing room.

“German international, he’s massive in the dressing room. He gets those young players around him: ‘Listen, steady the ship, let’s go out and have a good performance and win the game’,” Cole told BT Sport in December, as per Football London.

TBR’s view – Rudiger would be a stunning West Ham signing

West Ham are desperately after a centre-back this summer, as the owners continue to come in for criticism for a lack of action this summer. Only a permanent deal for Tomas Soucek has been completed, leaving Hammers fans frothing at the mouth.

A centre-back is crucial, with James Tarkowski and Wesley Fofana being linked. But bringing Rudiger would be a much better signing than the aforementioned defenders – though it does remain to be seen if the Hammers can tempt Chelsea into a deal.

Without Rice, that is.
