West Ham reportedly want Arsenal star that Paul Merson suggested Hammers should sign in January
West Ham are one of a number of clubs reportedly considering a move for Arsenal’s Alexandre Lacazette – a move Paul Merson suggested in January.
Lacazette, 30, is struggling for game time at Arsenal, managing just one Premier League game for the Gunners – in the defeat to Manchester City.
However, the France international has been excellent in the Carabao Cup – scoring in the 6-0 win over West Brom in the previous round.
Then, against Wimbledon on Wednesday, Lacazette scored in a 3-0 win from the penalty spot. 90Min say West Ham, Palace and Lyon want Lacazette.
That is because the ex-Lyon star’s future is in serious doubt. He is in the final 12 months of his contract at Arsenal, and a new deal looks unlikely.
Back in January 2021, Paul Merson suggested West Ham should sign Lacazette – after the Hammers sold Sebastian Haller to Ajax.
“West Ham, he would suit West Ham. He brings players in, and they have got legs around at West Ham,” Merson added, whole discussing Lacazette.
West Ham eye Lacazette: Merson right, Lacazette would be ideal
West Ham need a striker – simple as that. The Hammers really need another number nine that can both compete, and cover Michail Antonio.
Antonio is crucial to West Ham’s identity. His work rate, his pace, his aerial ability and his incredible strength is pivotal to West Ham performing well.
Without Antonio, not only do West Ham lose their heartbeat – but also have no-one to cover him. They need a striker, and one similar to Antonio.
Lacazette is pretty similar. He does not have the work rate, but he has the ability and is probably more lethal in the final third.
Without the pressure of playing for Arsenal, Lacazette might just be the ideal addition to West Ham’s side in the January transfer window.
