West Ham: Premier League giants want Payet; Bilic apologises; Sturridge move still on
As if inflicting a 5-1 defeat on them at the London Stadium last night was not enough, the Sun claim that Arsenal are plotting a move to take Dimitri Payet across London to the Emirates Stadium amid speculation that the playmaker is growing concerned by the club’s poor form which has left them languishing at the wrong end of the league table.
The Irons are ready to offer the 29-year-old a bumper contract to improve the terms of his current £125,000 per week deal in an attempt to persuade him to stay in east London.
After defeat to the Gunners yesterday, Slaven Bilic was frustrated and spoke to the press to apologise to the fans who watched on as his side collapsed. He said:
“We had some good spells in the game, like we’ve had good spells in the season but we have to be honest and say we don’t do it in every game for the full length of the game, so they deserved it. We had some spells at 1-0 for them, even 2-0 for them, but for 90 minutes, they were very aggressive. We knew they had that pace up front and sometimes they like to play on a big pitch, so they let you have something and attack you in the big space and they can be lethal. I’m very disappointed, I feel frustrated and humiliated to be fair and I must say sorry to the fans, the Club and everyone who has anything to do with West Ham United because it was really bad. Maybe the result [was unfair], if you look at the spells of the game, there were moments when we were alive until the last 20 minutes, but you can’t say they didn’t deserve it.”
It was an embarrassing defeat for the Hammers and their heaviest of the season as the Croatian comes under increasing pressure.
That may be eased though if the club can be successful in its attempts to bring Daniel Sturridge to the London Stadium as the Daily Star claim that bosses have not been deterred by Jurgen Klopp’s public claims that the England international will not be allowed to leave the club in January.
A £25 million move had been rumoured, and it seems that the Irons may still go in with an offer in the hope that the player will force a move or the Reds may change their mind.
