West Ham linked with midfielder that Jesse Lingard hailed in 2017

West Ham are being linked with Manchester United’s Nemanja Matic, who is a player that Jesse Lingard previously raved about years ago.

Lingard, 28, is an attacking midfielder who’s been a star for the Hammers in the second half of this season after joining on loan from Man United.

According to Eurosport, West Ham are now looking at more Man United players as potential targets ahead of this summer.

The report states that Lingard is “likely” to move from Old Trafford to the London Stadium permanently, but the Hammers are also interested in the duo of Matic and Phil Jones from their Premier League rivals.

Matic, who earns £120,000-a-week (Spotrac), is someone that West Ham are now checking out.

Where EVERY Euro 2020 Squad Would Finish In The Premier League

The 32-year-old is an experienced defensive midfielder who won three Premier League titles at Chelsea, and he’s been at Old Trafford since 2017.

He’s no longer a nailed-on starter for Man United, but has still made 34 appearances across all competitions this campaign and can fill in effectively in the centre of the pitch.

It’s interesting to hear current West Ham favourite Lingard speak highly of Matic when the two became teammates:

“He’s taller than I originally thought!” Lingard said, as quoted by the Mirror in 2017.

“Obviously you don’t tend to watch a lot of other teams but you see what he can bring. He stabilises the play, breaks up the play…”

TBR’s View:

If Matic is available for a cheap deal, he could be a decent signing for West Ham to provide competition for Declan Rice and Tomas Soucek.

David Moyes’ squad is going to need beefing up during the summer window if they get over the line for European qualification, as right now they do look a little short on numbers in certain areas of the pitch.

However, Matic isn’t a long-term solution for the Hammers, and they shouldn’t be forking out ridiculous money on transfer fees or wages.
