West Ham United are not taking their foot off the gas in terms of potential reinforcements as they aim to further add to their squad after the signing of Niclas Fullkrug.

The Germany international swapped Borussia Dortmund for the Hammers in a deal believed to be worth £27m as he put pen to paper on a four-year deal.

The Hammers have also signed Crysencio Summerville from Leeds United, Max Kilman from Wolverhampton Wanderers, Wes Foderingham on a free transfer and Brazilian youngster Luis Guilherme from Palmeiras, with Julen Lopetegui and Technical Director Tim Steidten working diligently behind the scenes to improve the squad.

West Ham are seemingly not done yet in the transfer market and if reports are to be believed, they are interested in signing a Liverpool star who nearly moved elsewhere earlier this summer.

West Ham United eyeing Liverpool defender Joe Gomez

Liverpool defender Joe Gomez came close to joining Newcastle United this summer in a deal worth £45m, with the Reds agreeing a separate deal to sign Anthony Gordon from St. James’ Park for £75m. However, neither of the two moves came to fruition as the Magpies raised money through the sales of Yankuba Minteh and Elliot Anderson to fall in line with the PSR guidelines.

Now, a report from Give Me Sport states that Gomez is attracting interest from West Ham, with Bayern Munich also keeping tabs on the versatile defender.

Lopetegui is eager to bolster his rearguard and Gomez could add some much-needed depth to their backline, with the England international capable of anywhere across the defence.

What did Joe Gomez say about West Ham last season?

Gomez hailed West Ham’s ‘quality’ last term after featuring in Liverpool’s 3-1 win against the Hammers in September 2023.

“West Ham have got great quality, they’ve got it up front and throughout the team. Michail Antonio is a big threat and we knew that was going to be difficult,” he said.

“It’s a big result for us, going to 1-1 was a moment we had to reset and regroup and we did that. It’s just about us staying confident and keep playing our football.”

He made 51 appearances in all competitions for Liverpool last season, representing one of his most productive spells at Anfield since moving to the club as a teenager in 2015.

However, the Hammers face an uphill battle to snap up the 27-year-old, with Gomez keen to remain at Liverpool and prove his worth under new manager Arne Slot according to The Times.

The Hammers have Kurt Zouma, Konstantinos Mavropanos, Nayef Aguerd and Max Kilman as their centre-back options currently, but they could do well with a player like Gomez, who would add loads of experience and versatility to their rearguard.

West Ham have also been linked with Inter Milan’s Yann Bisseck, while Nice’s Jean-Clair Todibo is another player they admire in that position. The Frenchman, however, is believed to be keen on a move to Juventus, so Lopetegui will have to look elsewhere to bolster his backline.
