West Ham have surely got to try and sign Norwich City’s Jamal Lewis

A new left-back is reportedly West Ham United’s priority ahead of 2020/21.

football.london claims the Hammers see upgrading the left side of their defence as something of the ‘utmost importance’.

At the moment, manager David Moyes has two senior options at his disposal in Arthur Masuaku and Aaron Cresswell.

Neither particularly covered themselves in any glory last season, and arguably the position is in need of a revamp with the same two options having been in place at the club since 2016.

Cresswell, who joined in 2014, turns 31 in December and is arguably the more likely to be moved on.

The Irons should try and squeeze as much out of his potential sale as possible, and then make a beeline for Norwich City’s Jamal Lewis, who has been attracting Premier League interest recently and rightly so.

Liverpool were said to be keen before ultimately signing Kostas Tsimakis, and Newcastle United have also been linked (Daily Mail).

The Canaries are said to value Lewis at around £20 million, and West Ham ought to get busy to bring a deal to fruition.

TBR’s View – Lewis would reinvigorate West Ham’s left side

£20 million seems steep, but there is always a chance of that coming down given Norwich have just been relegated. It could also be structured so that some of that could be made in add-ons.

Northern Ireland international Lewis – who was born in Luton – is definitely worth pursuing by West Ham, who are in clear need of reinvigorating the left side of their defence.

He and Max Aarons really caught the eye in 2019/20, and aged 22 his prime years are still some way off.

Perhaps West Ham officials could even try and offer cash plus one of Masuaku or Cresswell to sweeten the deal.
