Toni Martinez has posted on Twitter ahead of what could be his Champions League debut on Tuesday night for Portuguese giants FC Porto – and West Ham United supporters have reacted to his post, questioning their club’s decision to let him go.
Martinez, 23, joined West Ham as a teenager from Valencia in 2016. However, he was hardly given a chance in the first team despite an enormous 25 goals in 26 appearances for the club’s Under-23 side. Only three first-team games followed.
It saw the Spain Under-17 international leave West Ham on a free transfer last summer after tricky loan spells in Spain with Lugo, Rayo and Valladolid. He opted to joined Portuguese side Famalicao, who finished in sixth place in 2019-20.
The Spaniard had a hand in 20 goals during 40 games for Famalicao – scoring 14 and creating six more. It earned Martinez a move to Porto, and the Portuguese side are in the Champions League, facing Man City on Wednesday. He posted on Twitter.
Martinez has only managed two appearances for Porto this season out of a possible four games, starting only one of those. But he could make a third appearance on Wednesday evening, in what would be his first Champions League match of his career.
West Ham supporters have reacted to Martinez’s post on Twitter ahead of Wednesday’s clash at the Etihad, where Porto will look to stop Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City – and many have rued their club’s decision to get rid of the striker.
