West Ham United saw their under-21 outfit get off to a winning start in the Football League Trophy last night – with Ademipo Odubeko the star of the show.

The 17-year-old scored twice at Roots Hall as the Hammers won 3-1 against the League Two side, with Conor Coventry netting the other goal in stoppage time.

Stephen Humphrys netted what proved to be a consolation goal for the Shrimpers but all the talk following the contest was on the performance of Odubeko.

The striker signed for the West Ham academy from Manchester United and was a start for the club’s under-18 ranks last season.

He fired eight goals in as many matches for the team and also netted in his only outing for the under-23 side against Norwich City.

The centre-forward has represented the Republic of Ireland at under-17 level and on the showing of last night, he looks like becoming a star of the show at the London Stadium.

He took both of his goals well and on another night might have walked off with the match ball under his arm.

Following his clinical display, West Ham fans took to Twitter to heap praise on the teenager, with many hoping he can kick on and compete for a first-team place.

Here is a selection of Tweets from the Hammers faithful regarding the performance of Odubeko.
