West Ham fans react as Under 21 side launch stunning comeback against Newport

Not long after West Ham’s first team saw off Newport County 2-0 in the EFL Cup, the Under 21 side traveled to Wales to face Michael Flynn’s side in the EFL Trophy last night.

Where Manuel Pellegrini’s side made a good start and eased into the lead, the young guns struggled in the first half, with Antony Scully’s opening goal inside a minute swiftly cancelled out.

Tristan Abrahams equalised on 10 minutes, before goals from Corey Whitely, Lewis Collins and Ryan Hillier put Newport into a 4-1 lead before half time.

The youngsters looked dead and buried but Joe Powell’s penalty cut the deficit within two minutes of the restart, before Veron Parkes made it 4-3 six minutes later.

Kai Corbett pulled it back to 4-4 with just seven minutes remaining before Scully’s second goal of the night completed a staggering comeback.

West Ham fans on Twitter were understandably buzzing when the club’s official account put the scoreline out during a week when of course the senior team doesn’t have a fixture.

They believe that the future looks bright after such an eye-catching result against an experienced side who have launched their fair share of cup shocks in recent years.

The Hammers fans would love nothing more than to see more players follow in the footsteps of Declan Rice and make the jump into the first team and results like this won’t do the youngsters’ chances any harm at all.
