West Ham United missed out on the chance to go third in the Premier League table on Monday night as they were held to a 0-0 draw by Aston Villa at Villa Park – and Hammers fans have bemoaned the performance of Manuel Lanzini.
In what was a close affair, Villa probably shaded the clash with West Ham having Lukasz Fabianski to thank for a stunning save to deby John McGinn. Wesley and Jack Grealish also had very good chances to break the deadlock.
The Hammers offered very little going forward, and after the sending off of Arthur Masuaku, a point away from home became the priority. Masuaku was sent off for a second yellow, after Mike Dean adjudged him to have fouled Ahmed El Mohamady.
Indeed, West Ham were non-existent in attack despite the likes of Sebastien Haller, Felipe Anderson and Andriy Yarmolenko all starting. Manuel Lanzini also started, but the Argentine – who earns £70,000 a week (Spotrac) – looked quiet.
Prior to his season-long injury, Lanzini had scored 20 goals in 99 appearances for the Hammers. During his 14 games after the injury, he has scored just once. From one in five to one in 14 is quite a drop, and one that should alarm West Ham fans.
Hammers supporters reacted on Twitter to Lanzini’s display and many are of the belief that he is yet to return to the player that starred in claret and blue before picking up the injury in Argentine training prior to last summer’s World Cup.
Lanzini not the same player since he came back from that long term injury… I’m starting to wonder if he ever will be! ?⚒

Just got to watch the game. We kept attacking from the left even with 10 men, kinda surprised Anderson isn’t more injured. Lanzini is non existent.

Seen some say that and some say was great effort I thought defence and midfield didn’t stop Anderson and Yarmolenko maybe was slightly lazy as was Lanzini also lacked quality

Agreed, if an attacking player had to come off it should have been lanzini besides he had a very poor game and we defo missed Anderson after he went off

Not Lanzini's best game. Haller should have scored, but his overall play was brilliant.

Fredericks shouldn't wear the shirt again
