West Ham fans near universal in praise of Declan Rice

The versatile teenager was excellent as West Ham beat Everton 3-1.

West Ham United picked up an excellent first three points of the season yesterday. The Hammers have struggled before the international break but looked far better in their clash with Everton yesterday.

Manuel Pellegrini got his team selection right and several West Ham players impressed. One man in particular who deserves plenty of praise is Declan Rice.

The youngster had a tough international break. He decided to pull out of Republic of Ireland duty as he considers whether to pursue an international future with England. Based on his performance yesterday, Gareth Southgate should be keeping an eye out.

Apployed in the holding midfield role he commanded the play against a lost looking Everton midfield.

The 19-year-old put in a display way beyond his tender years. It was the sort of assured display that needs little description. He never gave the ball away, played positive passes when necessary and had Gylfi Sigurdsson shackled until an Everton tactical shift no longer made the Iceland international his priority. As soon as that happened, Sigurdsson scored.

Rice was superb and the teenager has West Ham fans purring on social media. If he can keep up this sort of performance then the Hammers have a special talent on their hands…
