Jack Wilshere played 45 minutes in the pre-season defeat to Newcastle United on Saturday – and some West Ham fans on Twitter were impressed with his performance.

The 27-year-old entered the action at half-time and was part of a Hammers team that were much brighter in the second period than a flat first-half.

Manuel Pellegrini’s side ended up losing 1-0 in the Premier League Asia Trophy fixture, with Yoshinori Muto netting in the first-half from close-range.

Wilshere showed some great touches in the centre of the park when he was on the pitch and helped West Ham got a stranglehold in midfield.

He played just eight first-team games last season due to injury, but will be hoping his luck is better this year at the London Stadium and that he can play an important role under Pellegrini.

The left-footed Englishman has shown in his career he can dazzle at the top level, but has been plagued with injury setbacks without.

A selection of West Ham supporters on social media feel Wilshere can have a key role to play in the new season based on his latest display.

He helped the Hammers get back into the game against Newcastle by getting on the ball regularly and he offers a great option in midfield.
