West Ham fans hail Declan Rice for performance in Manchester City defeat

West Ham suffered a narrow defeat away to Manchester City on Saturday – but some of the club’s fans on Twitter were left majorly impressed with the display from Declan Rice.

The Hammers were beaten 2-1 at the Etihad Stadium against Man City in the Premier League fixture.

Ruben Dias put the hosts in front with his header half an hour in, before Michail Antonio tapped in on the line just before half time to level the score.

John Stones scored the winner midway through the second half with a low driven shot, which made it 20 victories in succession across all competitions for runaway league leaders Man City.

Despite ending up on the wrong side of the scoreline at the weekend, West Ham held their own against one of Europe’s elite teams right now and are firmly in the race for a European finish.

David Moyes’ side remain fourth in the league table, but can take huge confidence from Saturday.

A selection of West Ham supporters on social media named their midfielder Rice as a colossus in the centre of the park at the Etihad Stadium.

The 22-year-old central midfielder did the dirty defensive work like he usually does, plus it was noticeable how comfortable he in possession and that he’s capable of driving runs forward on the ball.

He seems a nailed-on part of the England squad going into the summer’s European Championships and it’ll be interesting to see if he starts under Gareth Southgate in the tournament fixtures.

Here are some West Ham fans discussing Rice:
