West Ham had been on a strong run of form before their somewhat surprising home defeat to Watford and last night’s trip to Southampton offered an opportunity to get back on track.
Manuel Pellegrini’s Hammers had to wait an extra day to kick their festive programme off and the match at St Mary’s did not flicker into life until the second half.
Nathan Redmond opened the scoring for Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side – who went into the game on the back of two wins themselves, reinvigorated by the new manager bounce – but that only served to rouse Pellegrini’s men, especially Felipe Anderson.

West Ham are going through something of an injury crisis, which means more of the creative burden has fallen on the club record summer signing and he did not disappoint yesterday.
Within three minutes of Redmond’s strike, Anderson hauled his side level and just six later, he put them in front; and a battling defensive performance meant that all three points came back to east London.
It was a well needed victory to get West Ham’s festive programme off to the best possible start and the club’s supporters were full of praise for the man who made it happen…
