West Ham fans fume over resting players in cup defeat only to lose to Wolves

The quality of West Ham United’s season so far meant that they went into Saturday’s FA Cup fourth round clash against League 1 basement club AFC Wimbledon with no immediate threat of relegation hanging over their heads.

That is testament to the improvement Manuel Pellegrini has overseen at the London Stadium and it also gave the Chilean the opportunity to go on and make a real fist of the competition.

Instead, he passed up that opportunity, making a host of changes to his side, who were completely blown away by Wimbledon in the first half and still contrived to let in two goals after the break.

That effectively signalled the end of West Ham’s season, but fans travelled to see their side face Wolves last night expecting to see the positive effect of resting a few key faces for that embarrassing loss against the Dons.

What they got was another abject performance on the road, where the hosts were excellent value for their 3-0 win and could have won by more.

And that got many West Ham fans wondering what the point of resting the players on Saturday was, if it produced a putrid performance like the one they saw at Molineux…
