Manuel Pellegrini has told West Ham United’s official website that he believes Carlos Sanchez will be an important player for the Hammers this season despite a difficult first campaign – and West Ham fans have reacted on Twitter.
Sanchez, 33, joined West Ham from Serie A side Fiorentina last season for a fee believed to be in the region of £3.8million (Viola Nation). But it was a difficult campaign for the holding midfielder, who had impressed at the 2018 World Cup.
A long-term injury limited the midfielder to just eight appearances for the Hammers, but he seems fit this time around and after remaining an unused substitute against Manchester City, he made a seven-minute appearance against Brighton.
Speaking to the club’s official website, Pellegrini stated that former Aston Villa midfielder Sanchez as well as winger Andriy Yarmolenko will be important players for the east London club during the 2019-20 campaign.

“Carlos is the only replacement we have for Declan Rice and he is working very hard to recover his performance that he had before his injury,” Pellegrini said. “Andriy was nine or ten months without playing one game. They are two important players.”
Sanchez has just one year left on the two-year deal he signed in the summer of 2018, and if he is to remain at the London Stadium he will need to become that important player that Pellegrini is hoping he can become.
West Ham fans have reacted on Twitter to Pellegrini’s comments about Sanchez, with many disagreeing with the Chilean manager over Sanchez’s importance. The majority of Hammers fans do not think the midfielder is good enough.
